180 Degree Rule

Here i found a very helpful video on the 180 degree rule.

Definitions

Shot - Reverse Shot

Shot reverse shot also known as countershot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

Match On Action

Match On Action means that when something happens in the scene then when there is a cut, the same piece of action must be going on. This is an example of continuity editing and is very important in helping the audience continually understands exactly what is happening.

ECS as and A2 Media Studies Course Booklet

Film Openings

I was looking through youtube at AS Media Studies film openings when i came across this video 'Torment'. I found this opening very integueing for various reasons, the editing effects in this were very good such as the colour changing from a high contrasted view to black and white at 0:50-0:57 and also the face appearing in the mirror at 1:27. The camera angles were very structured for the genre of the video and helped create tension throughout. However, the opening did not have quality transitions; and the subtitles were in very basic font which did not create much effect. The part that stood out to most was at 1:47 when the scratches were enhanced on her arm, this caught my eye as it was something that had happened at the beginning of the video which was seen to be in her dream, whereas now it had been portrayed as reality, which also built up more tension.

Film Openings

In Thursdays lesson we were looking at film openings from not only our school but other schools also, doing this gave us a wider range of what will be and will not be looked for in our own film openings; such as not revealing the complete plot in the opening 2 minutes but ensuring you include various camera angles and camera shots. I learnt that the editing of the film opening is one of, if not the most important aspects of producing a outstanding film opening. I'm really excited to see if our class (preferably my group) can top last years..
